DIY: Egg White Face Masks

Sometimes an amazing night can consist of a face mask in comfy PJ’s with The Real Housewives of Orange County (Always go for the OG’s ) D.I.Y. face masks are my favorite to whip up on nights like those. I love how simple and affordable they are. Also, you get the piece of mind that you are putting whole ingredients on your skin, instead of harsh chemicals. I love to research different ingredients and how they can benefit my skin. One of my go-to ingredients is egg whites. While they can get a bit smelly, they’re packed with goodness for your skin.

Why Egg Whites?

  • Proteins – Promote tissue repair and promotes strong, wrinkle-free skin.
  • Potassium – Hydrates, moisturizes and preserves moisture in skin cells.
  • Riboflavin – Eliminates toxic and cell-damaging free radicals that create wrinkles.
  • Magnesium – Promotes youthful radiant skin by slowing down the aging process of skin.

I have listed three of my all time favorite egg white masks. Whether you have acne, acne scarring, or super parched skin, there is a mask below for you. What I love most about these masks, besides the amazing skin benefits, is that all of the ingredients you probably have in your kitchen right now.

1. Acne-Fighting Egg White Face Mask

one

I had extremely unpleasant acne when I was a teenager and pretty much tried every treatment under the sun. This mask was and still is one of my go to masks when my skin is misbehaving.

Benefits:

  • Honey – Has antiseptic and antibacterial properties. Also, a wonderful moisturizer and skin-lightening agent.
  • Lemon Juice –  Powerful astringent that fights off acne-causing bacteria. Lightens skin and reduces discoloration caused by acne-scarring.

Ingredients:

  • 1 egg white
  • 1 teaspoon of fresh lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon of honey

Directions:

  1. In a clean mixing bowl, whisk together the egg white and lemon juice until the mixture becomes frothy. The lemon juice masks the odour of the egg white. Add ½ teaspoon of honey and stir well.
  2. Wash your face with warm water to open up your pores. Using clean hands or a cotton ball, apply the mixture onto your face, avoiding the sensitive areas around your mouth and eyes.
  3. Relax yourself as you wait for the mixture to settle and dry on your face. You can lie down and breathe deeply, thinking happy thoughts!
  4. Keep the mask on for 10-15 minutes. When the mixture has completely dried on your face, gently scrub it off using warm water, tackling all areas of your face in a circular motion. Pat dry with a towel and marvel at the smooth feel of your skin!

Tips:

  1. When applying the mixture, work upwards from your chin to your cheeks and then to your forehead using a gentle circular motion.
  2. Avoid the sensitive areas around the eyes and mouth. The skin in those areas is drier and, if stretched by this tightening mask, can become wrinkled.
  3. This wonderful mask is very effective in getting rid of excess face oils. If you have dry skin, please refrain from using this drying and tightening face mask.

2. Skin-Lightening Egg White Face Mask

Because of my acne, I was left with hyper pigmentation, or acne-scars. I tried so many products to help me lighten the appearance of my dark spot and saw no results. This mask, however, helped me get my skin to where it is now.

Benefits:

  • Turmeric – Reduces dark spots caused by acne and evens out discolorations.
  • Orange Juice – Tones skin.

Ingredients:

  • 1 teaspoon orange juice
  • 1 egg white
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder

Directions:

  1. Place the egg white and orange juice in a small mixing bowl and whisk until it becomes frothy.
  2. Add in turmeric powder and mix thoroughly. Make sure the mixture is not too drippy.
  3. Using clean hands, apply the mixture to your face and massage in a circular motion, allowing it to sink deep into your skin. Keep it on for 15 minutes while you lie down to prevent gravity from pulling the mask downward.
  4. When the time is up, gently scrub off the dried mask from your face and apply moisturizer. A perfect natural moisturizer is 3-4 drops of olive oil.

Tips:

  1. Wear an old t-shirt over your clothes to prevent yellow stains from turmeric, which can be really hard to wash off.
  2. This egg white mask can be quite drying, so it’s best to apply olive oil to your skin after washing it off.
  3. Refrain from talking or smiling with the mask on because stretching the tight skin may cause wrinkles to appear.

3. Hydrating Egg White Face Mask

INGREDIENTS1.png

My skin is oily in my t-zone, which is perfect for the two masks above. However, my cheek area and around my jaw is prone to dry skin. This mask is perfect for anyone with dry skin or prone to dry patches.

Benefits:

  • Avocado – Hydrates and moisturizes skin, creating a youthful glow.
  • Yogurt – Contains live cultures, which eliminate acne-causing bacteria. Nourishes dry, flaky skin, back into soft, supple, and youthful skin.

Ingredients:

  • 1 egg white
  • ¼ ripe avocado
  • 1 teaspoon yogurt

Directions:

  1. Using a fork, mash the avocado until it turns into a lump-free paste.
  2. Add the egg white and yogurt and mix well.
  3. Apply a thick coat of the mixture onto your face with clean fingers and sit for about 15 minutes.
  4. Wash off the mask with lukewarm water when the time is up, and pat your face dry with a towel. Enjoy the look of your moisturized skin!

Tips:

  1. Use a ripe avocado so that it is easier to mash it into a lump-free paste. You can also freeze, then thaw it before mashing to make things easier. If you have a blender, use it instead of a fork to quickly and efficiently blend the avocado into a lump-free puree.
  2. Use plain, unsweetened yogurt with live cultures when making this face mask.
  3. To avoid a drippy mess, ensure that you apply the face mask over your bathroom or kitchen sink.

If you try any of the face masks, comment down below and let me know how they worked for you – I would love to hear your thoughts. Until next time my Wild Pretty Things.

Loving Tan

In case you weren’t aware, I am a very pale skinned lady. So pale skinned that at night time during Coachela every year I have to fend off hundreds of giant moths that live in the valley. Turns out that night time in the desert my skin is the most luminous point in the desert. Leading all of the moths to come flying right to my milky skin. (This has slightly traumatized me from moths – eek) Besides my moth hi jinx, I have never really had a problem with my paleness.  But the last few years, right before Coachella, I have been buying a month package at a tanning salon and feeling awful about it. The results are always way better than anything I have ever achieved from being in the sun, but I feel bad about the damage my skin is taking from those bulbs.

I have always been too afraid to try a self-tanner with my light skin. Countless Star magazine covers have featured A-list celebrities being put on blast for the orange glow of their bad self-tans and I think that has always put fear in me. If Anne Hathaway can’t get a decent tan with her wealth and reputation then what chance do I have with my self-applied, drugstore self-tanner.

I bet you have seen Loving Tan come across your Instagram feed a time or two. That is how I found out about the brand of self-tanner. Their feed features post after post of results submitted by average people who have seen amazing results with the products.  From women trying to get rid of those winter white legs to olive skinned beauties trying to elevate their tan to the next level. The coloration difference results are amazing, but what was even more impressive to me was how natural the tan looked. Even women as pale is their befores as myself have submitted photo after photo of natural bronzed skin. These results looked way too good to be true – I decided to try it and placed my first order!

This is how the items arrived packaged in the box. Each order comes with a cute little thank you note with a quote on the backside. ( Pictured below) I love the detailing and thought that is put into the packaging of the product. Opening the box and packaging was like opening a present that just kept revealing more and more beautiful layers.

Even the bottles themselves are beautifully packaged with a sheeny light pink and white comb that just makes me so happy! I ordered the 2hr Express, the 6hr Processing mouse, applicator mitt, polishing glove, bronzing lotion, and the extender to help with reaching the back more easily. Everything was about what you would expect to pay for a self-tanner – Nothing was too expensive.

Tips for Applying the Mouse:

  • Make sure to shave, exfoliate, and lotion your entire body 24 hours before applying the mouse. This will ensure that you are able to get an even tan across your entire body.
  • Lotion your elbows, ankles, and knees before applying the tan. This will make these areas look more natural once the tan has processed.
  • Move quickly! This stuff dries really quickly and I got best results when I applied the mouse evenly across the section and worked it into the skin quickly.
  • Work in circles, buffing the mouse into the skin.
  • When doing your arms and legs, make sure to apply the mouse to the entire arm or leg area before tanning the knees, elbows, or ankles. Only use the excess on the glove for those areas to get a natural tan there.

My Results:

FullSizeRender (31)

This picture was taken with the first application on the left and my second application on the right. I forgot to take a before photo so I put some photos of my paleness below. Coloration like this would take me an entire month at a tanning salon. Here I was able to get that done in 4 hours and with no damage to my skin. I would absolutely recommend and will be repurchasing Loving Tan.

Pros:

  • Packaging is gorgeous and exciting to open.
  • Affordable price point.
  • Smells AMAZING!!!!!!!!
  • Arrived very quicky

Cons:

  • I thought that the medium tan would be a little darker after the first application. I got good coverage, I just expected to be a little tanner. Second application was the desired coloration.
  • Seems to fade pretty quickly. After a few days I noticed that it was a lot lighter. I reapplied and was happy with it.
  • Hands and feet look streaky. This might be because I have never applied self-tanner before and need to learn how to properly tan those areas.

All in all I think this is an amazing product that gave me the results I desired. I am thinking I will try the “Dark” instead of “Medium” when I reorder and see if that can correct some of the cons that I found with the product. The images for the Mitt and the mouse in dark, below,  are shop able links if you would like to try the self-tanner.

Have you ever used Loving Tan? What were your results?

“The Worlds Most Powerful Facial”

I absolutely love trying new beauty products, especially when it comes to skin care. I have had a love hate relationship with my skin since the good old days of puberty. My skin has calmed down quite a bit as I get older, but I still like to make sure I give it extra TLC.

My Skin History-

I thought a brief history on my skin will give you a better idea of how this product can really benefit someone who is prone to acne break outs. When I entered puberty my skin erupted with cystic acne. Now cystic acne isn’t your run of the mill acne. Cystic acne is a bacterial infection deep within the a pore. Cystic acne will be much deeper into the skin then a regular pimple, resulting in a large, painful zit. Because cystic acne penetrates so deep into the skin, if you have this condition is it very common to have hyper-pigmentation long after you skin clears up. This means that you will have dark spots that remain on your face. (Cystic acne just keeps on giving long after it’s gone – UGH!)

From my last year of Middle school and all the way through High School I suffered with pretty much my entire face being covered with zits and white heads. Anyone who has had acne knows how it can affect your self-confidence and make you just want to disappear. I pretty much tried everything when it came to trying to prevent my acne. A lot of the over the counter medications were way to strong and harsh on my skin – leaving it peeling or getting huge dry spots. Anything my dermatologist could offer me medication wise had a laundry list of side effects and I didn’t really notice a huge difference from them. What I did find to work was regular facials, but they were so pricey and man did those extractions kill!

Aztec clay was one of the all-natural products that really helped me see a huge difference in the appearance of my skin.

What you will need:

supplies

  • Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay
  • Apple Cider Vinegar
  • Application brush
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Face Serum (Optional)

Directions for Application-

  1. You are going to need a clean mixing bowl to place the clay into. I usually take a small spoon and use a full scoop. You don’t need very much of the dry clay to get a good amount of product. It is always best to start with less and add more if needed.      Dryclay
  2. Next you want to add an equal part of the Apple Cider Vinegar. Mix the two ingredients very well until it forms a thick paste.                                                                    wetclay
  3. Before I apply the mask, I like to put on a face serum. The mask pushes deep into the pores of your face, the mask will push the serum down into those layers if placed on the skin before the mask. I mentioned about that I have some hyper pigmentation from acne scarring, so today I used the Bliss “Peeling Groovy Facial Serum”.                                                                                                                                               serum
  4. Next, I like to use a MAC 190 brush to apply a thick layer of the paste mixture to my entire face. I find the MAC 190 is the perfect size for controlling where you spread the product.                                                                                                                                       apply2applyapply3
  5. You want to leave the mask on for 10-20 minutes. You will feel a pulling and tightening sensation when the mask is ready to come off.                                                     drying
  6. When removing any kind of mask or skin care product, you want to be very delicate so as not to damage the skin. I always use my wet hands and rub soft, small circles around my entire face. Resist the urge to rub hard and quickly! Your skin is significantly more delicate when it is wet. Being gentle with your wet skin will ensure that there are no damages to the skin that could result in more acne.                   washing
  7. If you have to use a washcloth to get any excess off, make sure it is a very soft wash cloth and move slowly and carefully.                                                                                         towel
  8. After any mask you apply you should always re-hydrate the skin with a facial lotion. This will help the skin replenish some of the moisture it lost from the clay.

Pros-

  • Extremely affordable – I was able to get a full pound of the clay for about $10 on Amazon.
  • From the moment you remove the mask you and see and feel a difference in the quality of your skin.
  • Easy to mix and apply.
  • All natural, not tested on animals, and no added fillers.
  • Can be used all over the body

Cons-

  • The Apple Cider Vinegar gives the mask a pretty pungent smell. I don’t find this to be a problem, but I can see how some people would not agree with it.
  • When you remove the mask your skin can be slightly red. This usually goes away in about 30 minutes.

If you are prone to breakouts this is going to be your new BFF! Leave comments below if you have tried or are going to try this mask. Images of all of the items needed for the mask will be listed and clickable below – So you can easily pick them up!
